- Otoplasty is a cosmetic ear surgery to correct the shape, position, or size of the ears.
- It is performed to reshape prominent ears (ear pinning), reduce large ears (ear reduction), or reconstruct underdeveloped ears (ear augmentation), often using incisions behind the ear to reposition and secure the cartilage.
- The procedure enhances facial balance and can improve self-esteem, with recovery involving dressings and avoiding trauma to the ears
The Procedure
- Incision: An incision is typically made in the natural crease behind the ear.
- Reshaping: The surgeon reshapes the underlying cartilage, often using permanent sutures to create a new fold or to hold the ear in its new position.
- Tissue Removal: In cases of ear reduction, excess skin and cartilage are removed.
- Anesthesia: The procedure can be performed under general anesthesia for children or local anesthesia for adults.
Recovery
- Dressing: A dressing is placed over the ears and should be kept clean and dry.
- Soreness and Swelling: Expect some soreness and swelling for a few weeks.
- Activity Restrictions: Avoid trauma to the ears and refrain from contact sports until cleared by a medical professional.
- Sleeping Position: Sleep in a position where you are not resting on your ears.
- Clothing: Wear button-up shirts to avoid pulling clothing over your head.
Who is a Candidate?
- Age: Can be done for children from around age 7 or 8 upwards and for adults.
- Conditions: Suitable for individuals bothered by prominent ears, large ears, or misshapen ears from birth or injury.
