Vitiligo is a skin disorder in which skin lose its color and commonly shows up as white patches on the skin. A pigment called melanin is responsible for giving the skin its color. Due to the destruction of pigment-forming cells known as melanocytes, vitiligo is characterized by a loss of pigment in the skin. Remove the top skin layer of the white patches and transplant healthy pigment cells (melanocytes) from another section of the body. After a few months, the transplanted melanocytes begin to produce pigment, which deposits in the surrounding skin and causes the white patches disappear.
